Alberta Incidence Study

The Alberta Incidence Study of Reported Child Abuse and Neglect (AIS) is designed to collect information about the children and families who are investigated by child welfare services on a periodic basis, using a standardized set of definitions, from every jurisdiction in Alberta. Two cycles of the study were completed for the years 2003 and 2008. The major findings from the AIS-2003 and the AIS-2008 may be downloaded on this website as well as the Government of Alberta website.

The two cycles of the Alberta Incidence Study of Reported Child Abuse and Neglect reflect a partnership between the provincial government, child welfare service providers including provincial level First Nations child welfare organizations, university-based researchers of multiple disciplines, child advocates and the Public Health Agency of Canada.

NOTE: These are findings that reflect the Alberta child welfare system. Please note also that publications related to the AIS are often only available in English.

For inquiries about the AIS-2014, please reach out to the coordinator of that study, Bruce MacLaurin at bmaclaur@ucalgary.ca.
