En Nouvelle-Écosse, le Minister of Community Services [Ministère des Services communautaires] offre des services de protection de l'enfance en vertu de la Children and Family Services Act (1990) [Loi sur les services aux enfants et à la famille]. Il y a 18 bureaux provinciaux répartis dans 4 régions de la province et un organisme de protection de l'enfance des Premières Nations. Ces organismes reçoivent des signalements de cas d'abus et de négligence et offrent des services de protection et de soutien aux enfants et aux familles de leur district.

Les services en protection de l’enfance sont du ressort juridique des autorités provinciales et territoriales, ce qui rend difficile toute compilation statistique au niveau national.

Les variations les plus notables entre les provinces incluent la variation de mandat par juridiction concernant l’âge d’éligibilité des enfants pour recevoir des services, les différences de durée de la prise en charge à l’extérieur du domicile et la définition même de prise en charge à l’extérieur du domicile.
