Il y a violence ou négligence envers les enfants lorsqu’un parent une autre prennant soin d'un enfant inflige des mauvais traitements ou omet de répondre adéquatement à ses besoins, entraînant ainsi ou pouvant entraîner des blessures Il existe cinq grandes catégories de violence envers les enfants : violence physique, violence sexuelle, négligence physique, violence psychologique et l'exposition à la violence conjugale.
