Chaque province et territoire possède sa propre législation qui définit la violence familiale et qui décrit comment réagir lorsqu’elle se produit. Certaines provinces et certains territoires considèrent que l’exposition à la violence familiale fait partie de la catégorie de la violence psychologique; alors que d’autres précisent qu’un enfant doit être témoin de violence familiale. Un enfant qui a été exposé à cette forme de violence peut avoir été témoin de violence entre les parents ou les personnes qui prennent soin de lui, ou avoir été indirectement exposé en entendant la violence ou en constatant les effets comme les bleus et autres blessures physiques.
