The case for culturally responsive services

The Office of the Child and Youth Advocate Newfoundland and Labrador

This recommendations report responds to a child protection case wherein children of a refugee family were forcibly removed from a home via warrant, causing significant trauma to the children and their non-English speaking mother. Follow up psychological services were recommended for the children and the parents requested the children continue to attend religous services, but there was little evidence that these recommendations/requests were followed up. The family was reunified but moved to another province. The advocate makes recommendations to ensure cultural competencey in workers and policing agencies; the provision of translation services; continuing religious/spiritual practices; and, mental health follow up services.
