CWRP Information Sheet #149E. Montreal, QC: Centre for Research on Children and Families.

This Information Sheet provides an overview of Canada’s national and international legal obligations to protect First Nations children, according to information submitted by the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society (Caring Society) and Amnesty International to the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal on First Nations Child Welfare. This covers legally binding documents such as the Canadian Human Rights Act, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. Arguments by the Caring Society and the federal government are presented concerning the government’s responsibility to First Nations children and families living on-reserve.
