The Canadian Incidence Study of Reported Child Abuse and Neglect (CIS) is the first nation-wide study to examine the incidence of reported child maltreatment and the characteristics of children and families investigated by Canadian child welfare services. The primary objective of the CIS is to provide reliable estimates of the scope and characteristics of child abuse and neglect investigated by child welfare services across Canada. The study includes substantiated, suspected, and unsubstantiated child welfare investigations, but does not include reports that were screened out before investigation or cases that were investigated only by police. The CIS is not designed to document unreported cases.
